धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर और श्रीकृष्ण के संवाद में इंदिरा एकादशी का महत्व
एक बार धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर ने भगवान श्रीकृष्ण से प्रश्न किया, “हे भगवान! आश्विन कृष्ण एकादशी का नाम क्या है, और इसका व्रत कैसे किया जाता है? इसके क्या लाभ हैं, कृपया मुझे विस्तार से बताएं।”
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने उत्तर दिया, “हे राजन! इस एकादशी का नाम इंदिरा एकादशी है। यह एकादशी पापों को समाप्त करने और पितरों को अधोगति से मुक्ति दिलाने वाली है। सुनो, राजन, इसकी कथा को ध्यानपूर्वक सुनो। इस कथा को सुनने मात्र से भी वायपेय यज्ञ के समान फल प्राप्त होता है।”
प्राचीनकाल में सतयुग के में, महिष्मति नामक एक समृद्ध नगरी में इंद्रसेन नामक एक धर्मशील और प्रभावशाली राजा अपने राज्य का संचालन कर रहा था। राजा इंद्रसेन हर प्रकार से सम्पन्न था, पुत्र-पौत्र और धन-धान्य से परिपूर्ण था, और विष्णु के प्रति अटूट भक्ति रखता था।
एक दिन, जब राजा इंद्रसेन अपनी सभा में प्रसन्नचित्त होकर बैठा था, अचानक आकाश मार्ग से महर्षि नारद प्रकट हुए और उनकी सभा में पधारे। राजा उन्हें देखकर तुरंत सम्मानपूर्वक हाथ जोड़कर खड़ा हो गया और विधिपूर्वक उन्हें आसन और अर्घ्य अर्पित किया।
देवर्षि नारद ने राजा के सामने आराम से बैठते हुए प्रश्न किया, “हे राजन! क्या आपके सभी अंग कुशल और स्वस्थ हैं? आपकी बुद्धि धर्म की ओर स्थिर है और आपका मन विष्णु भक्ति में पूरी तरह समर्पित है?” देवर्षि नारद की बातें सुनकर राजा ने कहा, “हे महर्षि! आपकी कृपा से मेरे राज्य में सब कुछ अच्छे से चल रहा है और यज्ञ जैसे पुण्य कर्म पूर्ण श्रद्धा के साथ सम्पन्न हो रहे हैं। कृपया बताएं, आपके आगमन का कारण क्या है?” ऋषि ने कहा, “हे राजन! आप मेरे आश्चर्यजनक वचनों को सुनिए।”
फिर देवर्षि नारद ने राजा से कहा, “एक बार मैंने ब्रह्मलोक से यमलोक की यात्रा की और वहाँ यमराज की श्रद्धा पूर्वक पूजा की। मैंने धर्मशील और सत्यवान धर्मराज की भी प्रशंसा की। यमराज की सभा में मैंने तुम्हारे पिता को देखा, जो एकादशी का व्रत न करने के कारण वहाँ थे। उन्होंने संदेश भेजा है कि यदि तुम आश्विन कृष्णा इंदिरा एकादशी का व्रत मेरे लिए करोगे, तो मुझे स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति संभव हो सकती है।”
यह सुनकर राजा ने पूछा, “हे महर्षि, कृपया इस व्रत की विधि मुझे बताएं।” नारदजी ने कहा, ” “आश्विन माह की कृष्ण पक्ष की दशमी तिथि को प्रात: काल स्नान और अन्य पवित्र क्रियाओं के बाद, फिर दोपहर में नदी या किसी पवित्र जलाशय में जाकर स्नान करें। इसके बाद, पितरों को श्रद्धापूर्वक श्राद्ध अर्पित करें और एक बार भोजन करें। एकादशी के दिन प्रात: काल दातून करके स्नान करें और व्रत के नियमों को पूरी श्रद्धा से स्वीकार करें। प्रतिज्ञा करें कि ‘मैं आज सभी भोगों को त्याग कर निराहार एकादशी का व्रत करूंगा।'”
हे अच्युत! हे पुंडरीकाक्ष! मैं आपकी शरण में हूँ, कृपया मेरी रक्षा करें। इस प्रकार, विधिपूर्वक शालिग्राम की मूर्ति के सामने श्राद्ध करके योग्य ब्राह्मणों को फलाहार और दक्षिणा दें। बची हुई श्राद्ध सामग्री को गौ को अर्पित करें और ऋषिकेश भगवान की पूजा धूप, दीप, गंध, पुष्प और नैवेद्य से करें।
रातभर भगवान के समीप जागरण करें। फिर द्वादशी के दिन प्रात:काल भगवान की पूजा करके ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराएँ। अपने परिवार, स्त्री और पुत्र के साथ आप भी मौन रहकर भोजन करें। नारदजी ने कहा, “हे राजन! यदि तुम इस विधि से और पूर्ण समर्पण के साथ इस एकादशी का व्रत करोगे, तो तुम्हारे पिता निश्चित रूप से स्वर्गलोक को जाएंगे।” इतना कहकर नारदजी अंतर्ध्यान हो गए।
राजा ने नारदजी के कथन के अनुसार अपने परिवार और सेवकों के साथ व्रत किया, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप आकाश से फूलों की वर्षा हुई। उनके पिता गरुड़ पर सवार होकर विष्णुलोक की ओर प्रस्थान कर गए। एकादशी के पुण्य से राजा इंद्रसेन ने निष्कंटक राज्य किया और अंत में अपने पुत्र को सिंहासन सौंपकर स्वर्गलोक को प्राप्त हुए।
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कथा समाप्त करते हुए युधिष्ठिर से कहाँ, “हे युधिष्ठिर! यही इंदिरा एकादशी व्रत का महिमा है। इस व्रत के पाठ और श्रवण से मनुष्य सभी पापों से मुक्त हो जाता है और सभी भोगों का अनुभव करके बैकुंठ धाम को प्राप्त करता है।”
Importance of Indira Ekadashi in the conversation between Dharmaraj Yudhishthir and Shri Krishna
Once Dharmaraja Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna, “O Lord! What is the name of Ashwin Krishna Ekadashi, and how is its fast observed? What are its benefits, please tell me in detail.”
Lord Krishna replied, “O King! The name of this Ekadashi is Indira Ekadashi. This Ekadashi ends sins and liberates ancestors from degradation. Listen, King, listen to its story carefully. Just by listening to this story, one gets the same result as Vayapeya Yagna.”
In ancient times, in the Satyuga, in a prosperous city named Mahishmati, a pious and influential king named Indrasen was ruling his kingdom. King Indrasen was prosperous in every way, was full of sons and grandsons and wealth, and had unwavering devotion towards Vishnu.
One day, when King Indrasen was sitting happily in his court, suddenly Maharishi Narada appeared from the sky and came to his court. On seeing him, the king immediately stood up with folded hands respectfully and offered him a seat and arghya as per the rituals.
Devarshi Narada, sitting comfortably in front of the king, asked, “O king! Are all your organs efficient and healthy? Your intellect is fixed towards religion and your mind is completely dedicated to the devotion of Vishnu?” Hearing the words of Devvarishi Narada, the king said, “O Maharshi! By your grace everything is going well in my kingdom and pious deeds like Yagya are being performed with full devotion. Please tell, what is the reason for your arrival?” The sage said, “O King! Listen to my astonishing words.”
Then Devarshi Narad said to the king, “Once I travelled from Brahmaloka to Yamaloka and worshipped Yamraj there with devotion. I also praised the righteous and truthful Dharmaraj. In the court of Yamraj, I saw your father, who was there because he did not observe the Ekadashi fast. He has sent a message that if you observe the fast of Ashwin Krishna Indira Ekadashi for me, then I may be able to attain heaven.”
Hearing this, the king asked, “O Maharishi, please tell me the method of this fast.” Naradji said, “On the Dashami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month, after morning bath and other sacred activities, then in the afternoon go to the river or any holy water body and take a bath. After this, offer Shraddha to the ancestors with devotion and eat food once. On the day of Ekadashi, brush your teeth in the morning and take a bath and accept the rules of the fast with full devotion. Take a vow that ‘Today I will fast without food, renouncing all pleasures.'”
O Achyuta! O Pundarikaksha! I am in your refuge, please protect me. Thus, after performing Shraddha in front of the idol of Shaligram in a proper manner, give fruits and Dakshina to deserving Brahmins. Offer the remaining Shraddha material to a cow and worship Lord Rishikesh with incense, lamp, fragrance, flowers and offerings.
Keep awake near the Lord throughout the night. Then on the day of Dwadashi, worship the Lord in the morning and feed the Brahmins. You too should eat silently with your family, wife and son. Naradji said, “O King! If you observe this Ekadashi fast with this method and with complete dedication, your father will definitely go to heaven.” Saying this, Naradji disappeared.
The king observed the fast with his family and servants as per Naradji’s advice, as a result of which flowers rained from the sky. His father rode on Garuda and departed for Vishnulok. Due to the virtue of Ekadashi, King Indrasen ruled without any trouble and finally handed over the throne to his son and attained heaven.
Lord Krishna, while ending the story, said to Yudhishthira, “O Yudhishthira! This is the glory of Indira Ekadashi fast. By reciting and listening to this fast, a person becomes free from all sins and attains Vaikuntha Dham after experiencing all the pleasures.”
ધર્મરાજ યુધિષ્ઠિર અને શ્રી કૃષ્ણ વચ્ચેના સંવાદમાં ઈન્દિરા એકાદશીનું મહત્વ
એકવાર ધર્મરાજા યુધિષ્ઠિરે ભગવાન કૃષ્ણને પ્રશ્ન કર્યો કે, “હે ભગવાન! અશ્વિન કૃષ્ણ એકાદશીનું નામ શું છે અને તેનું વ્રત કેવી રીતે રાખવામાં આવે છે? તેના શું ફાયદા છે, કૃપા કરીને મને વિગતવાર જણાવો.”
ભગવાન શ્રી કૃષ્ણએ જવાબ આપ્યો, “હે રાજા! આ એકાદશીનું નામ ઇન્દિરા એકાદશી છે. આ એકાદશી પાપોને દૂર કરશે અને પિતૃઓને અધોગતિમાંથી મુક્ત કરશે. રાજા, તેની કથા ધ્યાનથી સાંભળો. આ કથા સાંભળવાથી જ વ્યક્તિને પણ પ્રાપ્તિ થાય છે. વૈપય યજ્ઞ જેવા જ પરિણામો.
પ્રાચીન સમયમાં, સત્યયુગમાં, મહિષ્મતી નામની સમૃદ્ધ નગરીમાં ઇન્દ્રસેન નામનો ધર્મનિષ્ઠ અને પ્રભાવશાળી રાજા તેના રાજ્ય પર શાસન કરતો હતો. રાજા ઇન્દ્રસેન દરેક રીતે સમૃદ્ધ હતા, પુત્રો, પૌત્રો અને સંપત્તિથી ભરપૂર હતા અને વિષ્ણુ પ્રત્યે અતૂટ ભક્તિ ધરાવતા હતા.
એક દિવસ જ્યારે રાજા ઇન્દ્રસેન પોતાના દરબારમાં ખુશ બેઠા હતા ત્યારે અચાનક મહર્ષિ નારદ આકાશમાંથી પ્રગટ થયા અને તેમના દરબારમાં આવ્યા. તેમને જોઈને રાજા તરત જ આદરપૂર્વક હાથ જોડીને ઊભા થયા અને વિધિપૂર્વક તેમને આસન અને અર્ઘ્ય અર્પણ કર્યા.
રાજાની સામે નિરાંતે બેઠેલા દેવર્ષિ નારદે પૂછ્યું, “હે રાજા! શું તમારા બધા અંગો કાર્યક્ષમ અને સ્વસ્થ છે? તમારી બુદ્ધિ ધર્મ તરફ સ્થિર છે અને તમારું મન સંપૂર્ણપણે વિષ્ણુની ભક્તિમાં સમર્પિત છે?” દેવર્ષિ નારદની વાત સાંભળીને રાજાએ કહ્યું, “હે મહર્ષિ! આપની કૃપાથી મારા રાજ્યમાં બધુ બરાબર ચાલી રહ્યું છે અને યજ્ઞ જેવા પુણ્યકર્મો પૂર્ણ ભક્તિભાવથી થઈ રહ્યાં છે. કૃપા કરીને કહો, તમારા આગમનનું કારણ શું છે?” ઋષિએ કહ્યું, “હે રાજા! મારી અદ્ભુત વાતો સાંભળો.”
ત્યારે દેવર્ષિ નારદે રાજાને કહ્યું, “એક વખત હું બ્રહ્મલોકથી યમલોકમાં ગયો હતો અને ત્યાં યમરાજની સભામાં મેં એકાદશીના દિવસે યમરાજની સ્તુતિ કરી હતી વ્રત ન રાખવાના કારણો હતા કે જો તમે મારા માટે અશ્વિન કૃષ્ણ ઈન્દિરા એકાદશીનું વ્રત કરો તો મને સ્વર્ગની પ્રાપ્તિ થઈ શકે છે.
આ સાંભળીને રાજાએ પૂછ્યું, “હે મહર્ષિ, કૃપા કરીને મને આ વ્રતની પદ્ધતિ જણાવો.” નારદજીએ કહ્યું, “આશ્વિન મહિનાના કૃષ્ણ પક્ષની દસમી તારીખે સવારે સ્નાન અને અન્ય પવિત્ર વિધિઓ કર્યા પછી, પછી બપોરે નદી અથવા કોઈપણ પવિત્ર જળાશય પર જઈને સ્નાન કરવું. આ પછી પિતૃઓને શ્રદ્ધાપૂર્વક શ્રાદ્ધ કરો અને એકવાર ભોજન કરો. એકાદશીના દિવસે વહેલી સવારે સ્નાન કરો અને વ્રતના નિયમોનો સંપૂર્ણ ભક્તિ સાથે સ્વીકાર કરો. પ્રતિજ્ઞા લો કે ‘આજે હું સર્વ ભોગોનો ત્યાગ કરીશ અને નિરહર એકાદશીનું ઉપવાસ કરીશ.’
હે અચ્યુતા! હે પુંડરીકાશ! હું તમારું શરણ લઉં છું, કૃપા કરીને મારી રક્ષા કરો. આ રીતે શાલિગ્રામની મૂર્તિની સામે શ્રાદ્ધ કરો અને યોગ્ય બ્રાહ્મણોને ફળ અને દક્ષિણા આપો. બાકીની શ્રાદ્ધ સામગ્રી ગાયને અર્પણ કરો અને ધૂપ, દીપ, સુગંધ, ફૂલ અને નૈવેદ્યથી ભગવાન ઋષિકેશની પૂજા કરો.
આખી રાત ભગવાનની નજીક સતર્ક રહો. ત્યારબાદ દ્વાદશીના દિવસે સવારે ભગવાનની પૂજા કરો અને બ્રાહ્મણોને ભોજન કરાવો. તમારું ભોજન તમારા પરિવાર, પત્ની અને પુત્ર સાથે શાંતિથી ખાઓ. નારદજીએ કહ્યું, “હે રાજા! જો તમે આ રીતે અને સંપૂર્ણ સમર્પણ સાથે આ એકાદશીનું વ્રત કરશો તો તમારા પિતા અવશ્ય સ્વર્ગમાં જશે.” આટલું કહીને નારદજી અદૃશ્ય થઈ ગયા.
નારદજીના કથન મુજબ રાજાએ તેમના પરિવાર અને સેવકો સાથે ઉપવાસ કર્યો, પરિણામે આકાશમાંથી ફૂલોની વર્ષા થઈ. તેમના પિતા ગરુડ પર સવાર થઈને વિષ્ણુલોક જવા નીકળ્યા. એકાદશીના પુણ્યને કારણે રાજા ઇન્દ્રસેન ડર્યા વિના શાસન કર્યું અને છેવટે રાજગાદી પુત્રને સોંપીને સ્વર્ગમાં પહોંચી ગયા.
કથાનું સમાપન કરતી વખતે ભગવાન શ્રી કૃષ્ણએ યુધિષ્ઠિરને કહ્યું, “હે યુધિષ્ઠિર! આ ઈન્દિરા એકાદશી વ્રતનો મહિમા છે. આ વ્રતના પાઠ અને શ્રવણથી વ્યક્તિ સર્વ પાપોથી મુક્ત થઈ જાય છે અને સર્વ સુખોનો અનુભવ કરીને વૈકુંઠ ધામની પ્રાપ્તિ કરે છે. “
