“Bhaktamal,” written by Guru Nabhadas in 1585, is a collection of extraordinary stories of Indian saints and devotees. It contains the biographies of more than two hundred devotees, one of whom is the inspiring story of Bhakt Sadan Kasai.
Bhakt Sadan was a true devotee of Lord Jagannath. From a young age, he had a deep love for chanting the holy name of God. The name of Hari was an inseparable part of his life, and his soul resonated with the rhythm of kirtan. Although he was born into a kasai (butcher) family, his heart was full of compassion and devotion. The mere thought of killing any living being filled him with dread.
Though he earned his livelihood by selling meat, he never personally killed any animal. Bringing meat from others and selling it was his compulsion, but his soul was always immersed in devotion to God.
“Caste and creed do not matter. Whoever chants the name of Hari, belongs to Him.” (“जाति-पाँति पूछै नहिं कोई, हरि को भजै सो हरि का होई।”). This verse came alive in Sadan Ji’s life. कसाई सदन जी की भक्ति: मांस तौलते हुए भी भगवान की भक्ति में पूर्ण समर्पण
भक्त श्री सदन जी जन्म से कसाई जाति के थे, लेकिन भक्ति की कसौटी पर उनकी प्रेम और निष्ठा शुद्ध सोने की भांति खरी उतरी। जैसे कसौटी पर कसने पर शुद्ध सोने की चमक निखरकर आती है, वैसे ही सदन जी की भक्ति ने प्रभु के प्रेम में अपनी अनोखी चमक दिखलाई। यद्यपि उनका कर्म कुल परंपरा के अनुसार मांस बेचने का था, लेकिन वे स्वयं किसी जीव की हिंसा नहीं करते थे। वे केवल दूसरों के यहां से मांस लाकर बेचते थे।
एक बार उन्हें राह में एक शालिग्राम शिला मिली, जिसे वे बिना जान-पहचान तराजू पर मांस तोलने के लिए उपयोग में लाने लगे। अद्भुत बात यह थी कि शिला का वजन ग्राहक की मांग के अनुरूप स्वयं ही संतुलित हो जाता था। सदन जी की दिनचर्या चाहे जैसी भी थी, लेकिन उनका मन भगवान की भक्ति में सदा लीन रहता था। जब वे मांस तौलते, तो उनके मुख से हरि नाम का कीर्तन सहज ही फूट पड़ता। उनकी आँखों से अश्रु धाराएँ बहतीं, मानो उनके भीतर से भगवान की ओर प्रेम उमड़ रहा हो।
एक दिन, एक वैष्णव आचार्य साधु वहाँ से गुजरे। उन्होंने सदन कसाई की दुकान पर देखा कि तराजू में शालिग्राम जी रखे हुए हैं। यह देखकर उनके मन में बेचैनी हुई। महात्मा जी ने तुरंत सदन कसाई से कहा, “तुम क्या कर रहे हो? यह कोई साधारण पत्थर नहीं, यह तो साक्षात शालिग्राम भगवान हैं। तुम उनसे मांस तोल रहे हो, यह तो घोर पाप है!” सदन जी ने सिर झुका लिया और कहा, “महाराज, मुझे क्षमा करें। मुझे नहीं पता था कि यह शालिग्राम भगवान हैं। मैंने इसे केवल एक पत्थर समझकर उपयोग किया।”
मांस बेचने वाले की भक्ति पर क्यों रीझ गए शालिग्राम भगवान?
महात्मा जी ने सदन से विनती की और शिला को अपने साथ ले गए। उन्होंने उन्हें शुद्ध जल और पंचामृत से स्नान कराया, चंदन और इत्र लगाया, चाँदी के सिंहासन पर विराजमान किया। फिर भोग लगाया और भक्तिभाव से कीर्तन किया। महात्मा जी की आँखों से आँसू बह रहे थे। वे भगवान से कहने लगे, “हे नाथ, आप उस कसाई के यहाँ क्यों रह रहे थे? अब कृपया यहाँ प्रेमपूर्वक सिंहासन पर विराजें।”
लेकिन उसी रात, महात्मा जी के स्वप्न में शालिग्राम भगवान प्रकट हुए। भगवान ने उनसे कहा, “सुबह होते ही मुझे वापस सदन कसाई के पास पहुँचा दो।” महात्मा जी ने हैरानी से पूछा, “प्रभु, वह व्यक्ति मांस बेचता है। वह आपको तराजू में रखता है। वह स्थान अपवित्र है। आप वहाँ क्यों जाना चाहते हैं?”
भगवान मुस्कुराए और बोले, “कहीं मुझे किसी स्थान पर स्नान का सुख मिलता है, कहीं भोजन का आनंद, कहीं माला पहनने की खुशी, लेकिन सदन के यहाँ मुझे उसकी तराजू पर लुढ़कने में आनंद मिलता है। जब वह वह मांस तोलते हुए कीर्तन करता है, तो मुझे अपार आनंद मिलता है। उसकी सरलता और भक्ति मुझे अत्यंत प्रिय है। मुझे उसके पास ले जाओ।”
सुबह होते ही महात्मा जी ने भगवान की आज्ञा का पालन किया और शालिग्राम जी को लेकर सदन के पास पहुँचे। उन्होंने सदन जी से कहा, “मैंने बहुत बड़ा अपराध किया है, जो श्री शालिग्राम भगवान को आपसे मांगकर ले गया। ठाकुर जी ने स्वयं स्वप्न में मुझे आदेश दिया है कि उन्हें तुम्हारे पास ही रहना है। अब आप इन्हें ले लीजिए और जो चाहे कीजिए—चाहे इनसे मांस तोलिए या पूजा करिए।”
यह सुनते ही सदन जी के हाथ-पैर कांपने लगे। उनकी आँखों से आँसू बहने लगे। उन्होंने शालिग्राम भगवान को प्रेमपूर्वक हृदय से लगा लिया। सदन जी ने मन ही मन सोचा, “मैं इतना अपवित्र, इतना पापी और यह ठाकुर जी, साक्षात भगवान, मुझसे मिलने के लिए व्याकुल हैं! क्या मैं इनके लिए इतना भी नहीं कर सकता कि यह दूषित काम छोड़ दूँ?” उसी क्षण सदन जी ने कुलाचार के अनुसार मांस बेचने का काम भी छोड़ दिया। उनके हृदय में प्रभु श्री जगन्नाथ जी के दर्शन की तीव्र इच्छा जाग उठी।
उन्होंने सोचा, “ज्यादा से ज्यादा क्या होगा? भोजन नहीं मिलेगा, धन नहीं कमाऊँगा। लेकिन इससे बड़ा धन और क्या होगा कि ठाकुर जी मेरे लिए इतने प्रेम से व्याकुल हैं। अब मैं अपने जीवन का हर क्षण ठाकुर जी के चरणों में अर्पित करूंगा।” अपने घर-परिवार, कुल-कुटुंब और संसार के समस्त बंधनों को त्यागकर सदन जी भगवान श्री जगन्नाथ के दर्शन हेतु पुरी धाम के लिए निकल पड़े।
ग़लत आरोपों और हाथ कटने पर भी सदन कसाई का प्रभु के प्रेम में अडिग रहना
सदन कसाई जब तीर्थयात्रा के मार्ग पर आगे बढ़ रहे थे, तो उन्होंने देखा कि वैष्णवों की टोलियाँ नाचते-गाते कीर्तन करती हुईं श्रीधाम की ओर बढ़ रही हैं। वे भी उन्हीं के साथ चलने लगे, लेकिन जब उन लोगों को यह पता चला कि सदन जी जाति से कसाई हैं, तो वे उनसे दूरी बनाने लगे और घृणा करने लगे। यह देखकर सदन कसाई स्वयं ही उनका संग छोड़कर दूर-दूर चलने लगे।
आगे रास्ते में एक गाँव आया। सदन कसाई ने भिक्षा के लिए एक घर का दरवाज़ा खटखटाया। घर की स्त्री ने जब उनका सुंदर और तेजस्वी स्वरूप देखा तो मोहित होकर आग्रह किया कि वे वहीं बैठकर भोजन करें। सदन जी ने विनम्रतापूर्वक भोजन किया और जब चलने लगे, तो स्त्री ने अत्यंत आग्रहपूर्वक कहा कि वे रात में वहीं ठहर जाएँ।
सदन कसाई उसके आग्रह पर रात्रि में वहीं विश्राम करने के लिए ठहर गए। जब घर के सभी लोग सो गए, तो वह स्त्री उनके पास आई और प्रेमपूर्वक बोली, “तुम्हें देखकर मैं मोहित हो गई हूँ। कृपया मुझे अपने साथ ले चलो।” सदन कसाई ने शांत स्वर में कहा, “यदि तुम मेरा गला भी काट दो, तब भी मेरा प्रेम केवल प्रभु के लिए ही रहेगा। मैं संसार के मोह से परे हूँ।”
उस स्त्री ने उनकी बात का अर्थ कुछ और ही समझ लिया। उसने सोचा कि अपने पति को हटाने पर ही शायद सदन कसाई का प्रेम उसे प्राप्त हो सकेगा। अज्ञानवश उसने जाकर अपने पति का गला काट दिया और बिना किसी भय के वापस लौटकर सदन कसाई से बोली, “अब तो तुम मुझे स्वीकार करो।”
सदन कसाई यह सुनकर स्तब्ध रह गए। वे व्यथित स्वर में बोले, “देवी, तुमने यह क्या कर दिया? मैंने तो ऐसा कुछ नहीं कहा था।” परंतु वह स्त्री अब अडिग थी। उसने धमकी दी, “या तो मेरे साथ रहो, नहीं तो मैं सबको बताऊँगी कि तुमने ही मेरे पति की हत्या करवाई है।”
सदन कसाई के हृदय में प्रभु का प्रेम इतना दृढ़ था कि वे किसी भी भय या प्रलोभन से विचलित नहीं हुए। उन्होंने शांत भाव से कहा, “मुझे बदनाम कर दो, मुझे मार डालो, पर मैं अपने सत्य और अपने प्रभु से विमुख नहीं हो सकता।”
जब उस स्त्री ने देखा कि सदन जी उसकी इच्छा पूरी नहीं कर रहे, तो उसने अचानक जोर-जोर से शोर मचाना शुरू कर दिया। वह चिल्लाते हुए कहने लगी, “इन्होंने मेरे पति की हत्या कर दी है!” उसके शोर-गुल से गाँव के लोग इकट्ठा हो गए और सदन कसाई पर आरोप लगाते हुए उन्हें राजा के सामने प्रस्तुत किया गया। राजा ने जब उनसे अपराध स्वीकार करने के लिए कहा, तो सदन कसाई शांत भाव से मुस्कुराए और बोले, “सत्य तो प्रभु जानते हैं, मैं यहाँ सफाई देने नहीं आया हूँ।”
राजा ने कहा, “यदि तुम अपराधी हो तो तुम्हारे हाथ काट दिए जाएँगे।”
सदन कसाई ने विनम्रता से अपने दोनों हाथ आगे बढ़ा दिए और बोले, “मेरे प्रभु जगन्नाथ की भी भुजाएँ नहीं हैं। मैं उनके जैसा बनना चाहता हूँ। काट दीजिए, मैं प्रसन्न हूँ।”
राजा के आदेश पर उनके हाथ काट दिए गए। रक्त बह रहा था, पर उनके मुख पर कोई पीड़ा नहीं, केवल आनंद के आँसू थे। वे प्रभु जगन्नाथ का स्मरण करते हुए चलते गए और प्रार्थना करते रहे, “हे नाथ! बस इतना कृपा करना कि मेरा जीवन तब तक रहे जब तक मैं पुरी पहुँचकर आपके दर्शन न कर लूँ।”
प्रभु जगन्नाथ जी की कृपा से कटे हुए हाथों का पुनः प्रकट होना
सदन कसाई जगन्नाथ पुरी की ओर बढ़ते रहे। उनके कटे हुए हाथों से रक्त बहता जा रहा था, पर उनके मुख पर प्रभु प्रेम की मुस्कान थी। जैसे ही वे श्रीधाम पुरी पहुँचे और महाप्रभु के सिंह द्वार पर गिरकर दंडवत करने लगे। इसी समय श्री जगन्नाथ प्रभु की मूर्ति झूमने लगी। पुजारी आश्चर्यचकित हो गए। प्रभु ने कहा, “मेरा भक्त आ गया है। जाओ, उसे पालकी में बैठाकर यहाँ लाओ।”
पंडे और पुजारी सदन को खोजने लगे, लेकिन सदन तो विनम्रता की मूर्ति थे। जब पुजारियों ने उनसे कहा कि भगवान ने उन्हें पालकी पर बैठने की आज्ञा दी है, तब भी उन्होंने पालकी पर चढ़ने से मना कर दिया। लेकिन जब पुजारियों ने उन्हें भगवान का आदेश सुनाया, तब वे विनम्रतापूर्वक पालकी पर बैठे और भगवान जगन्नाथ जी के दर्शन के लिए चल पड़े।
जैसे ही उन्होंने श्री जगन्नाथ जी का दर्शन किया और साष्टांग दंडवत प्रणाम किया, उनके हृदय में यह पीड़ा हुई कि उनके हाथ नहीं हैं, जिससे वे भुजाएँ फैलाकर प्रणाम कर सकें। उनके आँसू छलक पड़े। उन्होंने प्रभु से कहा, “हे नाथ, मेरे हाथ होते तो मैं भी आपको दंडवत करता।” उसी क्षण प्रभु जगन्नाथ की कृपा से उनके कटे हुए हाथ पुनः प्रकट हो गए। सदन कसाई प्रभु के चरणों में गिरकर रोने लगे।
भगवान जगन्नाथ जी ने प्रेमपूर्वक कहा, “सदन, तुमने अपने आप को भक्ति की कसौटी पर खरा सिद्ध किया है। तुम्हारा विश्वास और प्रेम अमिट है। अब तुम संसार में भक्ति का प्रचार करो।”
सदन कसाई के पूर्व जन्म का रहस्य
सदन कसाई का जन्म, उनके पूर्व जन्म के कर्मों का परिणाम था। पूर्व जन्म में वे एक काशीवासी कर्मकांडी ज्ञानी एवं भक्त ब्राह्मण थे। उनके जीवन का आधार सत्य, धर्म और वेदों का अध्ययन था, लेकिन एक घटना ने उनके भाग्य की दिशा बदल दी।
एक दिन, एक गाय कसाई के घर से भागती हुई ब्राह्मण के समीप से गुज़री। उसके पीछे-पीछे कसाई उसे खोजता हुआ ब्राह्मण के पास पहुँचा और ब्राह्मण से पूछा, “पंडितजी, क्या आपने इस गली से कोई गाय जाते हुए देखी है?” उस समय ब्राह्मण मौन थे, लेकिन हाथ के इशारे से गाय की दिशा बता दी। कसाई ने उसी ओर जाकर गाय को पकड़ लिया और उसका वध कर दिया।
यह घटना गौहत्या में अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से भागीदार बनने का दोष बन गई। इस अपराध का दंड ब्राह्मण को अगले जन्म में भोगना पड़ा। उनके इस कर्म के कारण ही उन्हें कसाई के घर जन्म लेना पड़ा। कालांतर में, वही गाय अगले जन्म में एक स्त्री बनी और वह कसाई उसका पति। उसी स्त्री के माध्यम से सदना कसाई के हाथ काटे गए। इस दंड के परिणामस्वरूप सदना के पूर्व जन्म के समस्त पापों का नाश हो गया।
The Devotion of Sadan Kasai: Complete Surrender to God Even While Weighing Meat
Devotee Shri Sadan Ji was born into the Kasai (butcher) caste, but his devotion and faith were as pure as gold tested on a touchstone. Just as gold shines brighter when tested, Sadan Ji’s devotion to the Lord radiated its unique brilliance. Though his profession, according to family tradition, was selling meat, he never harmed any living being himself. He only brought meat from others and sold it.
One day, while on his way, he found a Shaligram Shila (sacred stone). Unaware of its divine significance, he began using it to weigh meat on his scale. The miraculous thing was that the stone would balance itself according to the weight demanded by the customer. Regardless of his daily activities, Sadan Ji’s mind always remained immersed in the worship of God. While weighing meat, he would naturally start singing the Lord’s name, and tears of devotion would stream from his eyes, as if his heart was overflowing with love for the Lord.
One day, a Vaishnava Acharya (saint) passed by. He noticed Shaligram Ji placed on Sadan Kasai’s weighing scale. Disturbed by the sight, the saint immediately confronted Sadan Kasai and said, “What are you doing? This is not an ordinary stone; it is none other than Shaligram Bhagwan Himself. You are using Him to weigh meat—this is a grave sin!” Sadan Ji bowed his head and humbly replied, “Maharaj, please forgive me. I had no idea this was Shaligram Bhagwan. I simply thought it was an ordinary stone and used it accordingly.”
Why Did Shaligram Bhagwan Adore the Devotion of a Meat Seller?
Mahatma Ji requested Sadan to hand over the sacred stone and took it with him. He bathed the Shaligram Shila with pure water and Panchamrit, anointed it with sandalwood paste and perfumes, and placed it reverently on a silver throne. He offered bhog (sacred food) and sang devotional hymns with utmost fervor. Tears streamed down Mahatma Ji’s eyes as he prayed to the Lord, saying, “O Nath, why did You stay with that butcher? Now, please reside lovingly on this throne.”
That night, Shaligram Bhagwan appeared in Mahatma Ji’s dream. The Lord instructed him, “By morning, return Me to Sadan Kasai.” Startled, Mahatma Ji asked, “Lord, that man sells meat. He placed You on a weighing scale in an impure place. Why do You wish to go back there?”
The Lord smiled and replied, “In some places, I enjoy bathing; in others, I relish offerings of food or wearing garlands. But at Sadan’s shop, I find immense joy rolling on his scale. When he weighs meat while singing my name, I experience unparalleled bliss. His simplicity and devotion are dear to Me. Take Me back to him.”
By morning, Mahatma Ji obeyed the divine command and returned the Shaligram Shila to Sadan. He said, “I committed a grave mistake by taking Shri Shaligram Bhagwan from you. Thakur Ji Himself instructed me in a dream to return Him to you. Now, please take Him back and do whatever you wish—whether you weigh meat or worship Him.”
Hearing this, Sadan’s hands trembled, and tears flowed from his eyes. He lovingly embraced the Shaligram Bhagwan to his heart. Sadan thought, “I am so impure, so sinful, yet this Thakur Ji, the Supreme Lord Himself, is eager to be with me! Can I not at least give up this unclean trade for Him?” At that very moment, Sadan abandoned his profession of selling meat, as dictated by family tradition. A profound desire to see Lord Shri Jagannath in Puri awakened in his heart.
He thought, “What’s the worst that could happen? I might go hungry, I might not earn wealth, but what greater wealth can there be than knowing that Thakur Ji is so lovingly eager for me? From now on, I will dedicate every moment of my life to His lotus feet.” Sadan left his home, family, and worldly ties and set out for Puri Dham to have darshan (a sacred audience) of Lord Shri Jagannath.
Sadan Kasai remained steadfast in his love for the Lord despite false accusations and a cut off of his hand
When Sadan Kasai was moving ahead on the path of pilgrimage, he saw that groups of Vaishnavas were moving towards Shridham, dancing and singing kirtan. Sadan began walking with them, but when they learned that he was a butcher by caste, they distanced themselves from him and treated him with disdain. Seeing this, Sadan quietly moved away and began walking separately.
Further along the way, he came to a village. Knocking on a door for alms, he was greeted by a woman who, upon seeing his radiant and handsome appearance, was captivated. She insisted he stay and eat. Sadan humbly accepted her hospitality and ate. As he prepared to leave, she earnestly requested that he spend the night there.
Sadan, respecting her wishes, decided to rest there for the night. When everyone in the household was asleep, the woman approached him and lovingly confessed, “Seeing you, I have become enchanted. Please take me with you.” Sadan calmly replied, “Even if you cut my throat, my love will remain solely for the Lord. I am beyond worldly attachments.”
The woman misunderstood his words, interpreting them as a sign that removing her husband might win her Sadan’s affection. Misguided, she killed her husband and returned to Sadan without fear, saying, “Now you must accept me.”
Sadan was shocked to hear this and exclaimed, “Devi, what have you done? I never said such a thing.” But the woman, resolute in her desires, threatened him, saying, “Either stay with me, or I will tell everyone that you were the one who incited this crime.”
Sadan’s heart was so steadfast in devotion to the Lord that no fear or temptation could shake him. He calmly said, “Defame me, kill me, but I will never abandon my truth or my Lord.”
When the woman saw that Sadan would not yield, she began shouting loudly, accusing him of murdering her husband. Her cries drew the villagers, who accused Sadan of the crime and presented him before the king. The king demanded that Sadan confess, but Sadan, smiling peacefully, said, “The truth is known to the Lord; I am not here to offer justifications.”
The king declared, “If you are guilty, your hands will be cut off.”
Sadan, with humility, extended both his hands and said, “My Lord Jagannath also has no arms. I wish to be like Him. Go ahead and cut them; I am happy.”
Following the king’s orders, Sadan’s hands were cut off. Blood flowed from his wounds, yet there was no sign of pain on his face—only tears of joy. He continued his journey, remembering Lord Jagannath, and prayed, “O Lord! Grant me the grace to live until I reach Puri and behold Your divine form.”
The Reappearance of Severed Hands by the Grace of Lord Jagannath
Sadan Kasai continued his journey toward Jagannath Puri. Blood flowed from his severed hands, but his face radiated a divine smile filled with love for the Lord. Upon reaching Shri Dham Puri, he fell prostrate at the Simha Dwar (Lion Gate) of Lord Jagannath’s temple. At that very moment, the idol of Lord Jagannath began to sway. The priests were astonished. The Lord proclaimed, “My devotee has arrived. Go, bring him here in a palanquin.”
The temple priests and attendants searched for Sadan, but he, embodying humility, remained unnoticed. When the priests informed him of the Lord’s command to ride the palanquin, he initially refused out of modesty. However, when they insisted it was the Lord’s order, he humbly agreed and proceeded toward the temple to behold Lord Jagannath.
As soon as Sadan saw Lord Jagannath and offered a full prostration, a deep sorrow filled his heart. He lamented that he could not extend his arms in devotion due to their absence. Tears streamed down his face as he prayed to the Lord, saying, “O Lord, if I had hands, I would have offered my obeisance to You with open arms.” At that very moment, by the grace of Lord Jagannath, Sadan’s severed hands miraculously reappeared. Overwhelmed, Sadan fell at the Lord’s feet and wept with gratitude.
Lord Jagannath lovingly addressed him, “Sadan, you have proven yourself worthy of the highest devotion. Your unwavering faith and love are eternal. Now, go forth and spread the message of devotion in this world.”
The Mystery of Sadan Kasai’s Past Life
The birth of Sadan Kasai was the result of his actions in a previous life. In his past life, he was a devout and scholarly Brahmin in Kashi, deeply rooted in the principles of truth, dharma, and the study of the Vedas. However, one incident dramatically altered the course of his destiny.
One day, a cow fleeing from a butcher ran past the Brahmin’s house. Chasing after it, the butcher approached the Brahmin and asked, “Panditji, have you seen a cow pass through this lane?” At that moment, the Brahmin remained silent but gestured with his hand to indicate the cow’s direction. The butcher followed the gesture, caught the cow, and slaughtered it.
This act made the Brahmin an indirect accomplice to the killing of the cow, incurring the sin of cow slaughter. As a consequence of this offense, the Brahmin had to bear the punishment in his next life. It was due to this karma that he was born into the household of a butcher.
In the course of time, the same cow was reborn as a woman, who became the wife of Sadan Kasai. Through this woman, Sadan Kasai’s hands were cut off. This punishment served to absolve the accumulated sins from his past life, leading to the ultimate purification of Sadan’s soul.

ભક્ત શ્રી સદનજી જન્મથી કસાઈ જાતિના હતા, પરંતુ ભક્તિની કસોટી પર તેમનો પ્રેમ અને નિષ્ઠા શુદ્ધ સોનાની જેમ ખરી ઊતરી. જેમ કસોટી પર કસવાથી શુદ્ધ સોનાની ચમક વધુ પ્રગટ થાય છે, તેમ સદનજીની ભક્તિએ ભગવાનના પ્રેમમાં પોતાની અનોખી ચમક દર્શાવી. તેમનું કર્મ કુટુંબ પરંપરા અનુસાર માંસ વેચવાનું હતું, પણ તેઓ પોતે ક્યારેય કોઈ જીવની હિંસા કરતા નહોતા. તેઓ માત્ર અન્યની જગ્યાએથી માંસ લાવીને વેચતા હતા.
એકવાર, માર્ગમાં તેમને શાલિગ્રામ શિલા મળી. તેઓએ તેને ઓળખ્યા વિના ત્રાજવા પર માંસ તોળવા માટે વાપરવા માંડી. આશ્ચર્યજનક વાત એ હતી કે શિલાનો વજન ગ્રાહકની માંગ અનુસાર પોતે જ સંતુલિત થઈ જતો હતો. સદનજીની દિનચર્યા ગમે તે હોય, તેમનું મન હંમેશા ભગવાનની ભક્તિમાં લીન રહેતું હતું. જ્યારે તેઓ માંસ તોળતા, ત્યારે તેમના મોઢેથી હરીનામના કીર્તન સ્વાભાવિક રીતે ફૂટી પડતા. તેમની આંખોમાંથી આંસુઓની ધારા વહેતી, જાણે કે તેની અંદરથી ભગવાન માટેનો પ્રેમ ઉભરાઈ રહ્યો હતો.
એક દિવસ, એક વૈષ્ણવ આચાર્ય સાધુ ત્યાંથી પસાર થયા. તેમણે સદન કસાઈની દુકાન પર જોયું કે ત્રાજવામાં શાલિગ્રામ ભગવાન મૂકવામાં આવ્યા છે. આ જોઈને તેમના મનમાં અસ્વસ્થતા થઈ. મહાત્માજીએ તરત જ સદન કસાઈને કહ્યું, “તમે આ શું કરી રહ્યા છો? આ કોઈ સામાન્ય પથ્થર નથી, આ તો સાક્ષાત શાલિગ્રામ ભગવાન છે. તમે તેમનાથી માંસ તોળી રહ્યા છો, આ તો ઘોર પાપ છે!” સદનજીએ માથું ઝુકાવી દીધું અને કહ્યું, “મહારાજ, મને માફ કરજો. મને ખબર નહોતી કે આ શાલિગ્રામ ભગવાન છે. મેં તેને માત્ર પથ્થર સમજીને તેનો ઉપયોગ કર્યો.”
માંસ વેચનારની ભક્તિ પર કેમ પ્રસન્ન થયા શાલિગ્રામ ભગવાન?
મહાત્માજીએ સદનજીને વિનંતી કરી અને શિલાને પોતાના સાથે લઈ ગયા. તેમણે શિલાને શુદ્ધ જલ અને પંચામૃતથી સ્નાન કરાવ્યું, ચંદન અને અત્તર લગાવ્યું, અને ચાંદીના સિંહાસન પર બિરાજમાન કર્યું. પછી ભોગ ધરાવ્યો અને ભક્તિભાવથી કીર્તન કરવાનું શરૂ કર્યું. મહાત્માજીની આંખોથી આંસુ વહેવા માંડ્યા. તેઓ ભગવાનને કહેવા લાગ્યા, “હે નાથ, તમે એ કસાઈના ઘરે શા માટે રોકાયા હતા? કૃપા કરીને હવે અહીં પ્રેમથી સિંહાસન પર બિરાજો.”
પણ તે રાત્રે મહાત્માજીના સ્વપ્નમાં શાલિગ્રામ ભગવાન પ્રગટ થયા. ભગવાને તેમને કહ્યું, “સવાર થતા જ મને પરત સદન કસાઈ પાસે લઈ જાઓ.” મહાત્માજી આશ્ચર્યચકિત થઈ ગયા અને પૂછ્યું, “પ્રભુ, તે વ્યક્તિ માંસ વેચે છે. તે તમને ત્રાજવા પર રાખે છે. તે સ્થાન અપવિત્ર છે. તમે શા માટે ત્યાં જવા માંગો છો?”
ભગવાને સ્મિત કરી અને કહ્યું, “ક્યાંક મને સ્નાનનો આનંદ મળે છે, ક્યાંક ભોજનનો આનંદ, ક્યાંક માળા પહેરવાની ખુશી. પણ સદનના ત્યાં મને તેની તુલા પર લોટવામાં જે આનંદ મળે છે, તે અપૂર્વ છે. જ્યારે તે માંસ તોળતો હોય અને હરીનામના કીર્તન કરતો હોય, ત્યારે મને અપાર આનંદ થાય છે. તેની સાદગી અને ભક્તિ મને અત્યંત પ્રિય છે. મને તેના પાસે લઈ જાઓ.”
સવાર થતા જ મહાત્માજીએ ભગવાનની આજ્ઞાનું પાલન કર્યું અને શાલિગ્રામજીને લઈને સદનના પાસે પહોંચ્યા. તેમણે સદનજીને કહ્યું, “મેં ખૂબ મોટું પાપ કર્યું છે, જે શ્રી શાલિગ્રામ ભગવાનને તમારી પાસેથી માંગી લઈને ગયો. ઠાકુરજીએ પોતે સ્વપ્નમાં મને આદેશ આપ્યો છે કે તેમને તમારી સાથે રહેવું છે. હવે તમે તેમને લઈ લો અને જે પણ કરવું હોય તે કરો—ભલે તેમનાથી માંસ તોળો કે પૂજા કરો.”
આ સાંભળતાં જ સદનજીના હાથ-પગ કંપી ગયા. તેમની આંખોમાંથી આંસુઓ વહેવા લાગ્યા. તેમણે શાલિગ્રામ ભગવાનને પ્રેમપૂર્વક હૃદયથી લગાવી લીધા. સદનજીએ મનમાં વિચાર્યું, “હું એટલો અપવિત્ર, એટલો પાપી, અને આ ઠાકુરજી, સાક્ષાત ભગવાન, મને મળવા માટે વ્યાકુળ છે! શું હું તેમના માટે એટલું પણ ન કરી શકું કે આ અપવિત્ર કામ છોડી દઉં?” તે જ ક્ષણે સદનજીએ પોતાના કુળ પરંપરા મુજબના માંસ વેચવાનું કામ પણ છોડી દીધું. તેમના હૃદયમાં ભગવાન શ્રી જગન્નાથજીના દર્શન કરવાની તીવ્ર ઇચ્છા જાગી.
તેમણે વિચાર્યું, “વધુમાં વધુ શું થશે? ભોજન નહીં મળે, ધન નહીં કમાઇ શકું. પણ આનાથી મોટી સંપત્તિ શું હોઈ શકે કે ઠાકુરજી મારા માટે આટલા પ્રેમથી વ્યાકુળ છે. હવે હું મારા જીવનનો દરેક ક્ષણ ઠાકુરજીના ચરણોમાં અર્પણ કરીશ.” પોતાનું ઘર-પરિવાર, કુટુંબ અને વિશ્વના તમામ બંધનો છોડીને સદનજી ભગવાન શ્રી જગન્નાથના દર્શન માટે પુરીધામ તરફ નીકળી પડ્યા.
ખોટા આરોપો અને હાથ કપાવા છતાં સદન કસાઈનો ભગવાન પ્રત્યેનો અડગ પ્રેમ
સદન કસાઈ તીર્થયાત્રાના માર્ગે આગળ વધતા હતા ત્યારે તેમણે જોયું કે વૈષ્ણવોના ટોળા નાચતા-ગાતાં કીર્તન કરતા શ્રીધામ તરફ જઈ રહ્યા છે. તેઓ પણ તેમની સાથે જોડાયા, પણ જ્યારે તેમને ખબર પડી કે સદનજી કસાઈ જાતિના છે, તો તેઓ દૂર થઈ ગયા અને તેમને નફરત કરવા લાગ્યા. આ જોઈને સદન કસાઈ પોતાની જાતે જ તેમને છોડી દૂર ચાલવા લાગ્યા.
રસ્તામાં આગળ એક ગામ આવ્યું. સદન કસાઈએ ભિક્ષા માટે એક ઘરનો દરવાજો ખખડાવ્યો. તે ઘરની સ્ત્રીએ જ્યારે તેમનો સુંદર અને તેજસ્વી સ્વરૂપ જોયું, તો તે મોહિત થઈ ગઈ અને આગ્રહ કર્યો કે તેઓ ત્યાં જ બેસી ભોજન કરે. સદનજીએ વિનમ્રતાથી ભોજન કર્યુ અને જ્યારે જવા લાગ્યા, ત્યારે સ્ત્રીએ વધુ આગ્રહપૂર્વક કહ્યું કે તેઓ ત્યાં જ રાત રોકાય.
સદન કસાઈ તેના આગ્રહ પર રાત્રે ત્યાં જ રહેવા માટે સંમત થયા. જ્યારે ઘરના તમામ લોકો સૂઈ ગયા, ત્યારે તે સ્ત્રી તેમની પાસે આવી અને પ્રેમથી બોલી, “તમને જોઈને હું મોહિત થઈ ગઈ છું. કૃપા કરીને મને તમારી સાથે લઈ જાઓ.” સદન કસાઈએ શાંત અવાજમાં કહ્યું, “તમે મારું ગળું પણ કાપી નાખો, તો પણ મારો પ્રેમ માત્ર પ્રભુ માટે જ રહેશે. હું સંસારના મોહથી પરે છું.”
તે સ્ત્રીએ તેમની વાતનો અર્થ કંઈક બીજો જ સમજી લીધો. તેણે વિચાર્યું કે તેના પતિને દૂર કરવા પર જ કદાચ સદન કસાઈનો પ્રેમ મેળવી શકશે. અજ્ઞાનવશ તે ગઈ અને તેના પતિનું ગળું કાપી નાખ્યું અને કોઈ ડર વિના પાછી આવી સદન કસાઈને કહ્યું, “હવે તો તમે મને સ્વીકારો.”
સદન કસાઈ આ સાંભળીને સ્તબ્ધ થઈ ગયા. તેઓ વ્યથિત અવાજમાં બોલ્યા, “દેવી, તમે આ શું કરી નાખ્યું? મેં તો કંઈક એવું કહ્યું જ નહોતું.” પરંતુ તે સ્ત્રી અડગ હતી. તેણે ધમકી આપી, “કાં તો મારી સાથે રહો, નહીં તો હું બધાને કહીશ કે તમે જ મારા પતિની હત્યા કરાવી છે.”
સદન કસાઈના હૃદયમાં પ્રભુ પ્રત્યેનો પ્રેમ એટલો દૃઢ હતો કે તેઓ કોઈ પણ પ્રકારના ભય કે લાલચથી ડગમગ્યા નહીં. તેમણે શાંત ભાવથી કહ્યું, “મને બદનામ કરી દો, મને મારી નાખો, પણ હું મારા સત્ય અને મારા પ્રભુથી વિમુખ નહીં થઈશ.”
જ્યારે તે સ્ત્રીએ જોયું કે સદનજી તેની ઈચ્છા પૂરી નથી કરી રહ્યા, ત્યારે તેણે અચાનક જોરશોરથી અવાજ કરવા માંડ્યો. તે ચીસો પાડી રહી હતી, “આએ મારા પતિની હત્યા કરી છે!” તેના શોરથી ગામના લોકો ભેગા થઈ ગયા અને સદન કસાઈને આરોપ લગાવીને રાજા સામે રજૂ કરાયા. રાજાએ જ્યારે તેમને પાપ સ્વીકારવા કહ્યું, ત્યારે સદન કસાઈ શાંતિથી હસ્યા અને કહ્યું, “સત્ય તો પ્રભુ જાણે છે, હું અહીં કોઈ ખુલાસો આપવા આવ્યો નથી.”
રાજાએ કહ્યું, “જો તમે ગુનેગાર હશો, તો તમારા હાથ કાપી નાખવામાં આવશે.” સદન કસાઈએ વિનમ્રતાથી પોતાના બંને હાથ આગળ લંબાવ્યા અને કહ્યું, “મારા પ્રભુ જગન્નાથની પણ ભુજાઓ નથી. હું તેમના જેવા બનવા માંગું છું. કાપી નાખો, હું પ્રસન્ન છું.”
રાજાના આદેશથી તેમના હાથ કાપી નાખવામાં આવ્યા. લોહી વહી રહ્યું હતું, પરંતુ તેના ચહેરા પર કોઈ પીડા નહોતી, માત્ર આનંદના આંસુઓ હતા. તેઓ પ્રભુ જગન્નાથના સ્મરણમાં ચાલતા ગયા અને પ્રાર્થના કરતા રહ્યા, “હે નાથ! બસ એટલી કૃપા કરજો કે મારું જીવન ત્યા સુધી રહે જ્યાં સુધી હું પુરી પહોંચી તમારા દર્શન ન કરી લઉં.”
ભગવાન જગન્નાથજીની કૃપાથી કપાયેલા હાથો પુનઃપ્રકટ થવા
સદન કસાઈ જગન્નાથ પુરી તરફ સતત આગળ વધતા રહ્યા. તેમનાં કપાયેલા હાથોથી લોહી વહી રહ્યું હતું, પણ તેમનાં ચહેરા પર પ્રભુના પ્રેમની એક મીઠી સ્મિત હતી. શ્રીધામ પુરી પહોંચતાની સાથે જ મહાપ્રભુના સિંહદ્વાર પર દંડવત કર્યા, અને પ્રણામ કરવા લાગ્યા. ત્યારે જ શ્રી જગન્નાથ પ્રભુની મૂર્તિ ઝૂમવા લાગી. પૂજારી આશ્ચર્યચકિત થઈ ગયા. પ્રભુએ કહ્યું, “મારો ભક્ત આવી ગયો છે. જાઓ, તેને પાલખીમાં બેસાડી અહીં લાવો.”
પંડા અને પૂજારીઓ સદનને શોધવા ગયા, પણ સદન તો વિનમ્રતાની પ્રતિમૂર્તિ હતા. જ્યારે પૂજારીઓએ તેમને કહ્યું કે ભગવાને તેમને પાલખીમાં બેસવા આજ્ઞા આપી છે, ત્યારે પણ તેમણે પાલખીમાં બેસવાનું નકાર્યું. પરંતુ જ્યારે પૂજારીઓએ ભગવાનનો આદેશ સાંભળાવ્યો, ત્યારે તેઓ વિનમ્રતાપૂર્વક પાલખીમાં બેસી ગયા અને ભગવાન જગન્નાથજીના દર્શન માટે આગળ વધ્યા.
જેમ જ તેમણે શ્રી જગન્નાથજીના દર્શન કર્યા અને સષ્ટાંગ દંડવત પ્રણામ કર્યો, તેમનાં હૃદયમાં આ પીડા થઈ કે તેમના હાથ નથી, જેનાથી તેઓ ભુજાઓ ફેલાવીને પ્રણામ કરી શકે. તેમના આંસુ છલકી પડ્યા. તેમણે પ્રભુને કહ્યું, “હે નાથ, મારા હાથ હોત તો હું પણ તમને દંડવત કરત.” તે જ ક્ષણે પ્રભુ જગન્નાથની કૃપાથી તેમના કપાયેલા હાથો ફરી પ્રગટ થઈ ગયા. સદન કસાઈ પ્રભુના ચરણોમાં પડીને રડવા લાગ્યા.
પ્રભુ જગન્નાથજીએ પ્રેમપૂર્વક કહ્યું, “સદન, તું તારી ભક્તિની કસોટી પર ખરો ઊતરી ગયો છે. તારો વિશ્વાસ અને તારો પ્રેમ અમિટ છે. હવે તું જગતમાં ભક્તિનું પ્રચાર કર.”
સદન કસાઈના પૂર્વ જન્મનું રહસ્ય
સદન કસાઈનો જન્મ તેમના પૂર્વ જન્મના કર્મોની ફળરૂપે થયો હતો. પૂર્વ જન્મમાં તેઓ એક કાશીવાસી કર્મકાંડી, ધાર્મિક વિધિઓમાં જાણકાર અને ધર્મનિષ્ઠ બ્રાહ્મણ હતા. તેમના જીવનનો આધાર સત્ય, ધર્મ અને વેદોના અધ્યયન પર ટકી રહ્યો હતો, પરંતુ એક ઘટનાએ તેમના ભાગ્યની દિશા બદલી નાખી.
એક દિવસ, કસાઈના ઘરેથી ભાગી રહેલી એક ગાય બ્રાહ્મણ પાસેથી પસાર થઈ. તેની પાછળ પાછળ, કસાઈ ગાયને શોધતો-શોધતો બ્રાહ્મણ પાસે પહોંચ્યો અને બ્રાહ્મણને પૂછ્યું, “પંડિતજી, શું તમે આ ગલીમાંથી ગાયને જતા જોયી છે?” તે સમયે બ્રાહ્મણ મૌન હતા, પરંતુ હાથના ઈશારાથી ગાયની દિશા બતાવી દીધી. કસાઈ તે દિશામાં ગયો, ગાયને પકડી લીધી અને તેનું વધ કરી નાંખ્યું.
આ ઘટના ગૌહત્યામાં આડકતરી રીતે ભાગીદાર બનવાના પાપનું કારણ બની. આ અપરાધનું ફળ બ્રાહ્મણે આવતા જન્મમાં ભોગવવું પડ્યું. આ પાપના પરિણામે તેમને કસાઈના ઘરમાં જન્મ લેવો પડ્યો. કાળક્રમે, તે જ ગાય આવતા જન્મમાં સ્ત્રી બની અને તે કસાઈ તેનો પતિ બન્યો. એ જ સ્ત્રી દ્વારા સદન કસાઈના હાથ કાપવામાં આવ્યા. આ દંડ દ્વારા સદનના પૂર્વ જન્મના તમામ પાપોનો નાશ થયો અને તે પ્રભુની ભક્તિમાં સંપૂર્ણ રીતે શરણાગત થયા.
