कैसे पुष्पदंत ने शिवमहिम्न स्तोत्र की रचना की?
पुष्पदंत, जो गंधर्व थे, इंद्रलोक की सभा में बैठकर दिव्य संगीत, भजन, और कीर्तन में लीन रहते थे। उनकी मधुर वाणी और सुरों से पूरी सभा सजीव हो उठती थी। लेकिन एक दिन उनके मन में आया कि स्वर्गलोक से बाहर निकलकर पृथ्वी पर भ्रमण किया जाए और वहां की सुंदरता और भक्ति का अनुभव किया जाए।
गंधर्व होने के नाते पुष्पदंत को अदृश्य रहने का वरदान प्राप्त था। उनकी उपस्थिति किसी को दिखाई नहीं देती थी, न उनकी वाणी सुनाई देती थी, और न ही उनके कार्यों का कोई आभास होता था। इस वरदान के साथ, वे पृथ्वी पर आए। उनका मन शिवभक्ति में रमा रहता था, और वे भगवान शंकर की आराधना, स्मरण और भजन में डूबे रहते थे।
पृथ्वी पर आते ही, पुष्पदंत ने एक पार्थिव शिवलिंग का निर्माण किया और प्रतिदिन फूल-बिल्वपत्तों से उसकी पूजा करने लगे। उस समय चित्ररथ नाम के एक प्रतापी और धर्मपरायण राजा हुआ करते थे, जो भगवान शिव के अनन्य भक्त थे। उनके दिन की शुरुआत भगवान शिव के पूजन से होती थी, जिसमें उन्हें प्रतिदिन ताजे और सुंदर पुष्पों की आवश्यकता होती थी।
अपनी भक्ति को सरल और व्यवस्थित बनाने के लिए, राजा ने अपने राज्य में एक अद्भुत उद्यान का निर्माण करवाया। इस उद्यान में मोगरा, चमेली, चंपा, कमल, कृष्णकमल, गेंदा जैसे रंग-बिरंगे और सुगंधित पुष्प खिले रहते। इसके साथ ही, हजारों बिल्व वृक्ष उद्यान में लगाए गए, जो शिव पूजन में सबसे अधिक प्रिय माने जाते हैं। राजा चित्ररथ प्रतिदिन इस उद्यान से ताजे फूलों को चुनवाते और श्रद्धापूर्वक उन्हें भगवान शिव के चरणों में अर्पित करते।
एक दिन श्री पुष्पदंत भ्रमण करते-करते वे चित्ररथ नामक राजा के सुंदर उद्यान में पहुंचे। उद्यान की अद्भुत शोभा और उसमें खिले रंग-बिरंगे फूलों को देखकर पुष्पदंत मंत्रमुग्ध हो गए। पुष्पदंत ने उन पुष्पों को देखा और मन में विचार किया, “ऐसे सुंदर पुष्प केवल देखने के लिए नहीं, बल्कि शिवपूजन जैसे पवित्र कार्य में समर्पित होने चाहिए।”
अगले दिन, प्रभातकाल में, पुष्पदंत उसी उद्यान में पहुँचे। बिना राजा की अनुमति के, वे अदृश्य रहकर फूल तोड़ने लगे और उन्हें शिवलिंग पर अर्पित करते रहे। यह क्रम कई दिनों तक चला। उनके मन में कोई स्वार्थ नहीं था। उनका केवल एक ही उद्देश्य था—इन दिव्य पुष्पों को भगवान शिव के चरणों में अर्पित करना। उन्हें यह अहसास नहीं हुआ कि यह कार्य राजा चित्ररथ के उद्यान का नियम भंग कर सकता है। वह तो केवल अपनी भक्ति में तल्लीन थे, और यही सोचते थे कि शिव का पूजन ही इन पुष्पों का सबसे उत्तम उपयोग है।
अगले दिन जब राजा चित्ररथ पूजा के लिए बाग में गए, तो उन्होंने देखा कि उनके प्रिय पुष्प गायब हैं। राजा ने इसे ईश्वर की इच्छा समझकर अनदेखा किया, लेकिन जब ऐसा बार-बार होने लगा, तो वे चिंतित हो गए। उन्होंने कई प्रयास किए यह जानने के लिए कि कौन उनके पूजा-पुष्प चुरा रहा है, लेकिन हर बार असफल रहे। दरअसल, पुष्पदंत अपनी दिव्य शक्तियों के कारण अदृश्य बने रहते थे।
आखिरकार, राजा ने एक युक्ति सोची। उन्होंने शिवलिंग पर चढ़ाए गए पवित्र बिल्वपत्र और फूलों को अपने उद्यान के मुख्य द्वार और पगडंडियों पर बिछा दिया। पुष्पदंत, इस योजना से अनजान, जब फूल लेने आए, तो उनका पैर उन पवित्र बिल्वपत्रों पर पड़ा। जैसे ही उन्होंने उन पर कदम रखा, उनकी दिव्य अदृश्यता की शक्ति समाप्त हो गई।
पुष्पदंत को यह एहसास हुआ कि उन्होंने अंजाने में एक बड़ी भूल कर दी। वे समझ गए कि उन्होंने भगवान शिव की पूजा के लिए दूसरों की संपत्ति का उपयोग करके गलत किया है। राजा चित्ररथ ने उन्हें पकड़ लिया और सभा में ले गए। जब पुष्पदंत ने अपनी पहचान बताई, तो उन्होंने ईमानदारी से अपनी भूल स्वीकार की और कहा, “मैंने केवल भगवान शिव की पूजा के लिए यह किया, लेकिन मैं समझ नहीं सका कि मेरी यह पूजा उचित नहीं थी।”
उन्होंने गहन पश्चाताप करते हुए भगवान शिव से क्षमा मांगी, उन्होने वहीं एक शिवलिंग का निर्माण किया और विधिपूर्वक पूजा की और भगवान शिव की उपासना में ध्यानमग्न होकर हृदय से प्रार्थना की। इस प्रार्थना के दौरान उन्होंने दिव्य छंदों की रचना की, जिनमें भगवान शिव की महिमा और उनकी अनुकंपा का वर्णन था। इन छंदों में पुष्पदंत का पश्चाताप, श्रद्धा और भक्ति झलक रही थी।
भगवान शिव, पुष्पदंत की इस आत्मा से उपजी प्रार्थना से अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए। उन्होंने न केवल पुष्पदंत को क्षमा किया, बल्कि उनकी खोई हुई शक्तियां भी उन्हें लौटा दीं। भगवान शिव, पुष्पदंत से बोले, “हे गंधर्व, तुमने जिस श्लोक संग्रह से मेरी स्तुति की है, वह मुझे अत्यंत प्रिय है। यह श्लोक संग्रह युगों-युगों तक ‘श्री शिवमहिम्न स्तोत्र’ के रूप में प्रचलित होगा और इसे गाने या पढ़ने वाला हर भक्त मेरी कृपा का पात्र बनेगा।”
महादेव ने आगे कहा, “तुम्हारे द्वारा स्थापित यह शिवलिंग, जिसे आज से ‘पुष्पदंतेश्वर शिवलिंग’ के नाम से जाना जाएगा, सभी प्राणियों के लिए सुख, शांति और मोक्ष का स्रोत बनेगा। जो भी इसकी श्रद्धा से आराधना करेगा या केवल दर्शन करेगा, उसके जीवन के सारे कष्ट दूर हो जाएंगे। और जो भक्त इस स्तोत्र का पाठ करेगा, वह असीम पुण्य का अधिकारी बनेगा और मेरी अनुकंपा से कृतार्थ होगा।”
Who wrote Shiv Mahima Stotra?
There are many stotras and prayers popular to please Lord Shiva. The Shiva Tandava Stotra, which exemplifies Ravana’s devotion, is widely known. But very few people know the story and significance of the Shiva Mahimna Stotra. This wonderful stotra was composed by Gandharvaraj Pushpadant, and it is not only a song of Shiva’s glory, but also has a deep description of devotion, repentance and Shiva’s innate simplicity.
A Gandharva named Pushpadant, who was famous for his singing and poetry, summed up the infinite glory of Shiva in these verses. He composed this when he realized his mistake. As a form of atonement, he wrote this stotra in praise of Lord Shiva. This stotra, composed in Sanskrit, has a total of 43 verses, which not only depict Shiva’s Devadhidev form, but also his compassion, simplicity and the unwavering faith of devotees in him.
This stotra is also a part of the ancient Indian scripture “Shiva Purana”. It is believed that reciting this stotra not only brings happiness and peace in the life of the devotee, but also bestows the immense blessings of Shiva.
How did Pushpadanta compose Shivamahimna Stotra?
Pushpadanta, who was a Gandharva, used to sit in the court of Indraloka and immerse himself in divine music, bhajans, and kirtans. His sweet voice and tunes would bring the whole court alive. But one day he thought of leaving heaven and visiting the earth to experience its beauty and devotion.
Being a Gandharva, Pushpadanta had the boon of being invisible. His presence was not visible to anyone, nor his voice could be heard, nor could anyone sense his actions. With this boon, he came to earth. His mind was immersed in Shiva bhakti, and he was immersed in the worship, remembrance and bhajan of Lord Shankar.
On coming to earth, Pushpadanta created an earthen Shivalinga and started worshipping it daily with flowers and Bilva leaves. At that time there used to be a majestic and pious king named Chitrarath, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. His day started with the worship of Lord Shiva, for which he needed fresh and beautiful flowers every day.
To make his devotion simple and systematic, the king built a wonderful garden in his kingdom. In this garden, colorful and fragrant flowers like Mogra, Jasmine, Champa, Lotus, Krishnakamal, Marigold used to bloom. Along with this, thousands of Bilva trees were planted in the garden, which are considered most loved in Shiva worship. King Chitrarath used to pick fresh flowers from this garden every day and reverently offer them at the feet of Lord Shiva.
One day, while wandering, Shri Pushpadant reached the beautiful garden of a king named Chitrarath. Pushpadant was mesmerized by the wonderful beauty of the garden and the colorful flowers blooming in it. Pushpadant saw those flowers and thought in his mind, “Such beautiful flowers should not be just for seeing, but should be dedicated to a sacred work like Shiva worship.”
The next day, in the morning, Pushpadant reached the same garden. Without the king’s permission, he began to pluck flowers invisibly and offer them to the Shivalinga. This continued for several days. He had no selfish motive in mind. He had only one purpose—to offer these divine flowers at the feet of Lord Shiva. He did not realize that this act could violate the rules of King Chitrarath’s garden. He was simply immersed in his devotion, and thought that worshipping Shiva was the best use of these flowers.
The next day when King Chitrarath went to the garden for worship, he saw that his favorite flowers were missing. The king ignored it thinking it to be God’s will, but when it started happening repeatedly, he became worried. He made several attempts to find out who was stealing his worship flowers, but failed every time. In fact, Pushpadant remained invisible due to his divine powers.
Finally, the king thought of a plan. He spread the holy Bilva leaves and flowers offered to the Shiva Linga at the main entrance and footpaths of his garden. Pushpadant, unaware of this plan, came to pick the flowers and stepped on those holy Bilva leaves. As soon as he stepped on them, his divine invisibility power ended.
Pushpadant realized that he had made a big mistake unknowingly. He understood that he had done wrong by using the property of others for the worship of Lord Shiva. King Chitrarath caught him and took him to the court. When Pushpadant revealed his identity, he honestly admitted his mistake and said, “I did this only to worship Lord Shiva, but I could not understand that my worship was not proper.”
He deeply repented and asked for forgiveness from Lord Shiva, he built a Shiva Linga there and worshipped it as per the rituals and prayed heartily, meditating in the worship of Lord Shiva. During this prayer he composed divine verses which glorified Lord Shiva and described His compassion. These verses reflected Pushpadanta’s repentance, faith and devotion.
Lord Shiva was extremely pleased with this soulful prayer of Pushpadanta. He not only forgave Pushpadanta but also restored his lost powers to him. Lord Shiva said to Pushpadanta, “O Gandharva, the collection of verses with which you have praised me is very dear to me. This collection of verses will be known for ages as ‘Shri Shivamahimna Stotra’ and every devotee who sings or recites it will be blessed with my grace.”
Mahadev further said, “This Shivalinga established by you, which will be known as ‘Pushpadanteshwar Shivalinga’ from today, will become a source of happiness, peace and salvation for all beings. Whoever worships it with devotion or simply sees it, all the troubles of his life will go away. And the devotee who recites this hymn will become entitled to infinite virtue and will be blessed with my mercy.”
શિવ મહિમ્ન સ્તોત્રની રચના કોણે કરી?

આ સ્તોત્ર પ્રાચીન ભારતીય ધર્મગ્રંથ “શિવ પુરાણ” નો પણ એક ભાગ છે. એવું માનવામાં આવે છે કે આ સ્તોત્રના પાઠથી ભક્તના જીવનમાં સુખ-શાંતિ તો આવે જ છે, પણ શિવની અસીમ કૃપા પણ પ્રાપ્ત થાય છે.
પુષ્પદંતે શિવમહિમ્ન સ્તોત્રની રચના કેવી રીતે કરી?
પુષ્પદંત, જે ગંધર્વ હતા, તેઓ ઈન્દ્રલોકની સભામાં બેસીને દિવ્ય સંગીત, ભજન અને કીર્તનમાં લીન રહેતા હતા. તેમની મધુર વાણી અને સૂરોથી આખી સભા જીવંત થઈ ઉઠતી હતી. પરંતુ એક દિવસ તેમના મનમાં વિચાર આવ્યો કે સ્વર્ગલોકની બહાર નીકળીને પૃથ્વી પર ભ્રમણ કરવું જોઈએ અને ત્યાંની સુંદરતા અને ભક્તિનો અનુભવ કરવો જોઈએ.
ગંધર્વ હોવાના કારણે પુષ્પદંતને અદૃશ્ય રહેવાનું વરદાન પ્રાપ્ત હતું. તેમની ઉપસ્થિતિ કોઈને દેખાતી ન હતી, ન તેમની વાણી સંભળાતી અને ન તો તેમના કાર્યોનો કોઈ ખ્યાલ આવી શકતો હતો. આ વરદાન સાથે, તેઓ પૃથ્વી પર આવ્યા. તેમનું મન શિવભક્તિમાં લીન રહેતું અને તેઓ ભગવાન શંકરની આરાધના, સ્મરણ અને ભજનમાં તત્પર રહેતા.
પૃથ્વી પર આવતાં જ, પુષ્પદંતે એક માટીના શિવલિંગની સ્થાપના કરી અને દરરોજ ફૂલ-બિલ્વપત્રોથી તેની પૂજા કરવા લાગ્યા. તે સમયના પ્રખ્યાત અને ધર્મપરાયણ રાજા ચિત્રરથ, ભગવાન શિવના અનન્ય ભક્ત હતા. તેમની દિનચર્યા શિવપૂજનથી શરૂ થતી હતી, જેના માટે તેમને દરરોજ તાજાં અને સુગંધિત ફૂલોની જરૂર પડતી.
પુજા માટે સરળતા રહે, તે માટે રાજાએ એક સુંદર ઉદ્યાન બનાવ્યું હતું, જેમાં મોગરો, ચમેલી, ચંપા, કમળ, કૃષ્ણકમળ અને ગલગોટા જેવા રંગબિરંગી અને સુગંધિત ફૂલો ખીલતા હતા. સાથે જ, હજારો બિલ્વ વૃક્ષો પણ વાવ્યા હતા, કેમ કે બિલ્વપત્ર શિવપૂજન માટે અતિપ્રિય માનવામાં આવે છે. રાજા ચિત્રરથ દરરોજ આ ઉદ્યાનમાંથી તાજાં ફૂલો એકત્ર કરાવતા અને શ્રદ્ધાપૂર્વક શિવલિંગ પર અર્પિત કરતા.
એક દિવસ પુષ્પદંત પોતાના ભ્રમણ દરમિયાન રાજા ચિત્રરથના આ સુંદર ઉદ્યાનમાં આવ્યા. ઉદ્યાનની અદ્ભુત શોભા અને તેમાં ખીલા રંગબિરંગી ફૂલોને જોઈને તેઓ મંત્રમુગ્ધ થઈ ગયા. પુષ્પદંતે વિચાર્યું, “આવા સુંદર ફૂલો ફક્ત જોવા માટે જ ન હોવા જોઈએ, પણ શિવપૂજન જેવા પવિત્ર કાર્યમાં સમર્પિત થવા જોઈએ.”
આ વિચાર સાથે, બીજા દિવસે સવારે, પુષ્પદંત એ ઉદ્યાનમાં ગયા. રાજાની પરવાનગી લીધા વિના, તેઓ અદૃશ્ય રહીને ફૂલો તોડવા લાગ્યા અને શિવલિંગ પર અર્પિત કરતા રહ્યા. આ સિલસિલો કેટલાય દિવસો સુધી ચાલતો રહ્યો. તેમના મનમાં કોઈ સ્વાર્થ ન હતો, માત્ર એક જ લક્ષ્ય હતું—આ દિવ્ય ફૂલો ભગવાન શિવને અર્પિત કરવાનું. તેમને આનો ખ્યાલ ન રહ્યો કે આ કામ રાજા ચિત્રરથના ઉદ્યાનના નિયમોનો ભંગ કરી શકે છે. તેઓ તો માત્ર ભક્તિમાં લીન હતા અને માનતા કે શિવપૂજન માટે આ ફૂલોનો શ્રેષ્ઠ ઉપયોગ થઈ રહ્યો છે.
થોડા દિવસો બાદ, જ્યારે રાજા ચિત્રરથ પોતાની શિવપૂજા માટે ઉદ્યાનમાં ગયા, ત્યારે તેમણે જોયું કે તેમના આરાધ્ય દેવ માટેના પ્રિય ફૂલો ગાયબ છે. રાજાએ પહેલે તો તેને ઈશ્વરની ઈચ્છા સમજીને અવગણ્યા, પરંતુ જ્યારે આવું વારંવાર થવા લાગ્યું, તો તેઓ ચિંતિત થયા. તેમણે ઘણા પ્રયાસો કર્યા કે જાણવા મળે કે કોણ તેમના પૂજાના ફૂલો ચોરી રહ્યું છે, પણ હંમેશા નિષ્ફળ રહ્યા. હકીકતમાં, પુષ્પદંત પોતાની દિવ્ય શક્તિઓના કારણે અદૃશ્ય રહેતા હતા.
અંતમાં, રાજાએ એક ઉપાય શોધ્યો. તેમણે શિવલિંગ પર ચઢાવવામાં આવેલા પવિત્ર બિલ્વપત્ર અને ફૂલોને પોતાના બગીચાના મુખ્ય દરવાજા અને રસ્તાઓ પર પાથરી દીધા. પુષ્પદંત, આ યોજનાથી અજાણ, જ્યારે ફૂલો લેવા આવ્યા, ત્યારે તેમના પગ તે પવિત્ર બિલ્વપત્રો પર પડ્યા. જેમ જ તેમણે તે પર પગ મૂક્યો, તેમની દિવ્ય અદૃશ્યતા શક્તિ સમાપ્ત થઈ ગઈ.
પુષ્પદંતને સમજાયું કે તેમણે અજાણમાં મોટી ભૂલ કરી છે. તેઓ સમજી ગયા કે તેમણે ભગવાન શિવની પૂજા માટે અન્યની સંપત્તિનો ઉપયોગ કરીને ખોટું કર્યું છે. રાજા ચિત્રરથએ તેમને પકડીને સભામાં લઈ ગયા. જ્યારે પુષ્પદંતે પોતાની ઓળખ આપી, તેમણે ઈમાનદારીથી પોતાની ભૂલ સ્વીકારી અને કહ્યું, “મેં માત્ર ભગવાન શિવની પૂજા માટે આ કર્યું, પરંતુ હું સમજી શક્યો નહીં કે મારી આ પૂજા યોગ્ય નહોતી.”
તેમણે ઊંડા પસ્તાવા સાથે ભગવાન શિવને ક્ષમા માંગી, ત્યાં જ એક શિવલિંગની સ્થાપના કરી અને વિધિવત પૂજા કરી અને ભગવાન શિવની ઉપાસનામાં ધ્યાનમગ્ન થઈને હૃદયથી પ્રાર્થના કરી. આ પ્રાર્થના દરમિયાન તેમણે દિવ્ય શ્લોકોની રચના કરી, જેમાં ભગવાન શિવની મહિમા અને તેમની કૃપાનું વર્ણન હતું. આ શ્લોકોમાં પુષ્પદંતનો પસ્તાવો, શ્રદ્ધા અને ભક્તિ ઝળકી રહી હતી.
ભગવાન શિવ, પુષ્પદંતની આ આત્માથી નીકળેલી પ્રાર્થનાથી અત્યંત પ્રસન્ન થયા. તેમણે માત્ર પુષ્પદંતને ક્ષમા જ ન કરી, પરંતુ તેમની ગુમાવેલી શક્તિઓ પણ તેમને પરત આપી. ભગવાન શિવ, પુષ્પદંતને બોલ્યા, “હે ગંધર્વ, તમે જે શ્લોક સંહિતાથી મારી સ્તુતિ કરી છે, તે મને અત્યંત પ્રિય છે. આ શ્લોક સંહિતા યુગો-યુગો સુધી ‘શ્રી શિવમહિમ્ન સ્તોત્ર’ તરીકે પ્રચલિત થશે અને તેને ગાનાર કે વાંચનાર દરેક ભક્ત મારી કૃપાનો પાત્ર બનશે.”
મહાદેવ આગળ બોલ્યા, “તમારા દ્વારા સ્થાપિત આ શિવલિંગ, જેને આજથી ‘પુષ્પદંતેશ્વર શિવલિંગ’ તરીકે ઓળખવામાં આવશે, તમામ પ્રાણીઓ માટે સુખ, શાંતિ અને મોક્ષનો સ્ત્રોત બનશે. જે પણ તેની શ્રદ્ધાથી આરાધના કરશે અથવા માત્ર દર્શન કરશે, તેના જીવનના બધા કષ્ટો દૂર થઈ જશે. અને જે ભક્ત આ સ્તોત્રનો પાઠ કરશે, તે અસીમ પુણ્યનો અધિકારી બનશે અને મારી કૃપાથી કૃતાર્થ થશે.”
