पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, दैत्य शुंभ-निशुंभ और रक्तबीज ने तीनों लोकों पर अपना आतंक फैलाना शुरू कर दिया था। उनके इस अत्याचार से देवता बहुत परेशान हो गए और भगवान शिव से मदद मांगने पहुंचे। रक्तबीज के पास एक अद्भुत वरदान था कि अगर उसके शरीर से कोई भी रक्त की बूंद गिरती, तो उससे कई नए रक्तबीज उत्पन्न हो जाते। इससे उसका अंत करना लगभग असंभव हो गया था, क्योंकि हर वार के साथ उसकी सेना बढ़ती जा रही थी।
यह देख सभी देवता बहुत चिंतित हो गए। तब भगवान शिव ने देवी पार्वती से अनुरोध किया कि वे इस समस्या का समाधान करें और दैत्यों का नाश करके अपने भक्तों की रक्षा करें। भगवान शिव की आज्ञा से देवी पार्वती ने माँ दुर्गा का रूप धारण किया और शुंभ-निशुंभ का वध कर दिया। लेकिन जब उन्होंने रक्तबीज से युद्ध किया और उसे घायल किया, तो उसकी रक्त की हर बूंद से हजारों नए रक्तबीज पैदा होने लगे। यह देखकर देवी दुर्गा भी असमंजस में पड़ गईं।

But when she fought with Raktbeej and injured him, thousands of new Raktbeej started being born from every drop of his blood. Seeing this, Goddess Durga also got confused.

દંતકથા અનુસાર, શુંભ-નિશુમ્ભ અને રક્તબીજ રાક્ષસોએ ત્રણેય લોકમાં પોતાનો આતંક ફેલાવવાનું શરૂ કર્યું હતું. તેમના અત્યાચારોથી દેવતાઓ ખૂબ નારાજ થઈ ગયા અને ભગવાન શિવની મદદ લેવા આવ્યા. રક્તબીજને અદ્ભુત વરદાન હતું કે જો તેના શરીરમાંથી લોહીનું એક પણ ટીપું પડે તો તેમાંથી અનેક નવી રક્તબીજ ઉત્પન્ન થાય છે. આનાથી તેને ખતમ કરવાનું લગભગ અશક્ય બની ગયું, કારણ કે દરેક હુમલા સાથે તેની સેના વધતી જતી હતી.
આ જોઈને બધા દેવતાઓ ખૂબ ચિંતિત થઈ ગયા. ત્યારે ભગવાન શિવે દેવી પાર્વતીને આ સમસ્યાનો ઉકેલ લાવવા અને રાક્ષસોનો નાશ કરીને તેમના ભક્તોની રક્ષા કરવા વિનંતી કરી. ભગવાન શિવના આદેશ પર, દેવી પાર્વતીએ માતા દુર્ગાનું રૂપ ધારણ કર્યું અને શુંભ-નિશુમ્ભનો વધ કર્યો. પરંતુ જ્યારે તેણે રક્તબીજ સાથે લડાઈ કરી અને તેને ઘાયલ કર્યો ત્યારે તેના લોહીના દરેક ટીપામાંથી હજારો નવી રક્તબીજ ઉત્પન્ન થવા લાગી. આ જોઈને દેવી દુર્ગા પણ મૂંઝાઈ ગઈ.
આ મુશ્કેલી જોઈને દેવી દુર્ગાએ તેના ઉગ્ર સ્વરૂપમાં પ્રગટ થઈને મા કાલરાત્રીનો અવતાર લીધો. મા કાલરાત્રીનું સ્વરૂપ ખૂબ જ ઉગ્ર અને ભયાનક હતું. તેમના શરીરનો રંગ ગાઢ અંધકાર જેવો કાળો હતો, તેમના વાળ વિખરાયેલા હતા અને તેમની ત્રણેય આંખોમાંથી વીજળી જેવા કિરણો નીકળતા હતા. માતા કાલરાત્રીએ માત્ર રક્તબીજની જ હત્યા કરી ન હતી, પરંતુ તેના શરીરમાંથી વહેતું લોહી પણ પોતાના મોંમાં શોષી લીધું હતું, જેથી લોહીનું એક ટીપું પણ પૃથ્વી પર ન પડે અને કોઈ નવી રક્તબીજનો જન્મ ન થઈ શકે. આ રીતે માતા કાલરાત્રિએ રક્તબીજનો વધ કરીને ત્રણેય લોકને તેના આતંકમાંથી મુક્ત કર્યા હતા.
