“Kararavinde Na Padaravindam” is a beautiful hymn that portrays the divine childhood of Lord Krishna, highlighting one of the simplest and most endearing forms of devotion—loving Him as one’s own child. This hymn immerses devotees in the enchanting childhood pastimes of Krishna and evokes deep feelings of affection and devotion.
This stotra was composed by the great saint Bilvamangala (also known as Lila Shuka), who is also the author of Sri Krishna Karnamrita. While not much is known about his exact period, it is believed that he hailed from South India. He traveled to Dwarka and later attained Samadhi in Vrindavan. Some traditions suggest he was from Andhra Pradesh, while others associate him with Kerala, where he is known as Bilvamangalathu Swamiyar.
The first verse of this hymn presents a mesmerizing image of Baby Krishna—floating on a banyan leaf over the vast cosmic waters at the time of dissolution, gently holding His tiny feet with His lotus-like hands and sucking His own toe. This divine vision fills the hearts of devotees with love and devotion, illustrating the Lord’s innocence and omnipotence at the same time.
The subsequent verses describe Krishna’s childhood pranks and miracles, such as His mischief in stealing butter, playful interactions with the Gopis, and the supernatural wonders He performed even as a child.
This hymn also reflects elements of Kerala’s traditions and customs. For instance, it mentions young Krishna wearing Vyaghra Nakha (tiger claw), a practice deeply rooted in Kerala’s cultural heritage. Additionally, the first verse of Bala Mukundashtakam, a highly revered hymn in Kerala, is taken from Sri Krishna Karnamrita.

करारविन्दे न पदारविन्दं मुखारविन्दे विनिवेशयन्तम् ।
वटस्य पत्रस्य पुटे शयानं बालं मुकुन्दं मनसा स्मरामि ।।१।।
श्रीकृष्ण गोविन्द हरे मुरारे! हे नाथ नारायण वासुदेव ।
